Everest (2015) : From A Different Angle

everest

Hello readers, how’s life been going?🙂

Today I want to share my personal review about a big-screen movie I’ve seen lately. Easy dear, I may not give you any spoiler!

Human beings simply aren’t built to function at the cruising altitudes of a 747.

A couple days ago, I saw a movie titled “Everest”. This movie was out last September, 2015. I’ve heard a bit about it, but never pay much attention into it. It was available on IMAX 3D. Woohoo! Imagine watching this on 3D theatre.

This Everest movie, actually based on true event: The 1996 Everest Disaster.

Honestly, I’ve never heard any of it before. Oh, where in the world was I all this time? Ketauan nih, taunya cuma Titanic doang😛

This movie is such an eye-opener to me. It took me travel into places I never seen, into new things I never knew or even imagined before. Things like..

Why?

Dan seterusnya.

I was totally amazed. I rate 4 stars from 5 for the cinematography. Breathtaking scenes of the majestic Everest from different angles. Keren abisss. Visually stunning. Call me kampring, norce, or whatever you named it, but there I was, stiffly speechless. Allaahu Akbar, Allaah Maha Besar.

Karena jalan cerita awalnya memang jujur aja, kinda flat and boring alias agak ngebosenin. Made me keep wondering, where’s the jump out part?

Kelar nonton, langsung Googling and Youtube-ing. I do my own research about this.

Descending a mountain is a lot more dangerous than climbing up.

Semakin nanjak, oksigen semakin menipis. Dan untuk tetap survive kita harus tetap bergerak, keep on moving or freezing to death. Death is often caused by a climber who sleep and not wake up for good. Di sini endurance sang pendaki diuji betul.

Ok, ok, noted. Eaaaa.. Aamiin 😂

I enjoyed Everest with my little sister, Dina. Untuk urusan selera film, kami memang klik. Psychological thriller, mystery and adventure are definitely our genre. Dina yang merekomendasikan film ini pada saya. Thank you, sissy😉

Memang udah lama banget pengen nonton Everest. Ini sama Gravity. Pokoknya yang science-fiction, lebih suka lagi yang based on true story. Tapiii…. nggak sempat-sempat.

Gak afdhol gitu, kalo ngerjain sesuatu gak sambil disambi kerjaaan lain. Multitasking anytime-anywhere. Huehehe.

Something beyond the power of words to describe.

The storyline was also very touching. The casts were doing their job very well.

Under my point of view, this movie was not too dramatic, but way more realistic. Rasanya seperti nonton National Geographic aja.

Tapi alur cerita tetap sesuai fakta. Demikian yang saya baca di Wikipedia. Sila googling aja ya, karena saya nggak hapal😀

Saya sendiri adalah penyuka sejarah sejak kecil. I love to read people’s biography and old history archives from around the world. And finding a book or movie based on an actual event, aroused my interest.

It gives me a chill, a certain feeling that: well, this is real.

Everest took me into another edge of the world. Snowstorm, acclimatize, blizzard, green boots, Hillary step, avalanche, endurance, and many more.

Khumbu Icefall

The struggling journey to reach the summit and descend, getting ready for a slowly painful death in the cold. The combination of very thin air, cold and low air pressure that hazardous enough to kill a human.

“Many deaths in high-altitude mountaineering have been caused by the effects of the Death Zone, either directly (loss of vital functions) or indirectly (wrong decisions made under stress, physical weakening leading to accidents). In the death zone, no human body can acclimatize. An extended stay in the zone without supplementary oxygen will result in deterioration of bodily functions, loss of consciousness and, ultimately, death”. —Wikipedia

This film is about bravery, heroic actions, humanity, between life and death situation. It’s about taking risk, your own risk of safety. Something I still can’t figure until now:

“Why did you risk your life for this? Is it worth it?”

It also managed me to look from another angle.

Seeing those people walking slowly from above the summit, I realized that human are just small, tiny creatures. Nothing but like dusts in the wind. It’s like seeing puppets with strings attached. And Allah is the Mastermind.

Running out of oxygen, on extreme temperature and height, desperately thirsty and hungry, exhausted, stranded in cold mountains for hours, hallucinated, disoriented, losing vision, body parts were totally swollen and numb—so cannot be moved.

That death and life situation brought me back to that moment when I gave birth to my child. There I was.. Sepenuhnya bergantung kepada Allah. Laa haula wa laa quwwata illaa billaah. Tiada daya dan upaya melainkan atas pertolonganMu, ya Allah..

Most people say that it’s all nature’s will. We against nature. Disaster is 100%  nature-factor. So I’m questioning, “Where is Allah, The Al Mighty?”

No one but Him.

There are times when we may feel weak and out of power.

There are times when we choose to give up for another try.

There are times when we figured: No matter how hard we tried, we’re only human, after all.

There are times when we were looking for something, or someone who can lift this burden we carry all this time.

There are times when we–as human–finally realized, we need to turn closer to God. To Allah.

There are times when we feel that we are nothing without Him.

It’s Him over anything, over everything.

Betapa baiknya Allah.

Astaghfirullaah.. Wal’iyadzubillaah 😥

A good book, movie, or story, always leaves a good impact on me. It gives me something to think about. It helps me to improve into a better version of myself. And so this one.

Panjang yaa reviewnya. Maaf kalo bikin ngantuk. Heheheu. This is another side of me, a side that most of people didn’t know. I love to watch good movies and learn a lesson from it.

Conclusion: For an adventurous-nature freak-type of person, I recommend this one. Really worth to watch.🙂

  1. Dulu jg saya mikirnya naik gunung tuh gitu aja mba, ternyata setelah nyobain beberapa kali (dan ketagihan) masyaAllah perjuangannya deh.. makanya pas kalo berhasil sampe puncak dan bs turun kembali dg selamat tuh, bahagia dan bersyukurnya luar biasa.. thanks for sharing ya mbak🙂

    • Masya Allah.. Hehehe, mungkinkah? 😂

Thank you for reading ya, Lativa. Salam kenal🙂

      • Iyaa.. awal2 naik gunung saya nangis, karena ngerasa gak kuat.. tp pasti disemangatin sama temen2.. dan mngkin naik gunung brg itu bisa jadi salah satu “ujian” buat ngeliat karakter seseorang, apakah dia sabar, apa gampang nyerah, apa setia kawan, atau sembrono (krn kan butuh teknik sm itung2an waktu gbs leha2). Naik gunung terahir itu akhir tahun kemarin.. sempet lalai keasyikan poto2 dan kebanyakan istirahat jadi keburu turun hujan dan kabut dingin super tebal (krn hampir malam), baju basah kuyup krn awalnya kan mikir bkl sampe sore2 jd gak pake jaket tebal.. terus dinginnya parah banget.. kalo diem dan nyerah mgkn bakal mati kedinginan kali kemarin.. jd maksain lanjut muncak biar bs bangun tenda dan istirahat. Seruuu deh hehe. *jadi curhat hahaa

        • Seru ya, masya Allah. Berharap bisa merasakan keseruan yang sama, aamin. One day, insya Allah🙂

Yes, I agree with you. Semacam uji karakter ya.. Jadi inget kata2nya salah satu survivor Everest 1996 disaster, Beck Weathers:

“The truest assessment of a man’s character is what they do when they think no one’s looking.”
